Taxicab Permits

Who is required to obtain a permit?

Anyone engaged in the business of operating any motor vehicle having a seating capacity of seven or less for the transportation of passengers for hire and not operated exclusively over a fixed and defined route.

$50.00 per taxicab application fee.

$50.00 per taxicab renewal fee.

Term

The taxicab license expires on June 30th following the date of issue. The license may be renewed each year to the same permit holder and for the same motor vehicle.

Application Procedures

Fill in ALL requested information on the forms.

Submit the completed forms, together with the $50.00 per taxicab fee, to the City Clerk's Department.

The Chief of Police shall investigate each application and will have ten working days in which to report back to the City Clerk. The Chief of Police may recommend approval or denial.

Upon approval by the Chief of Police, the taxicab license shall be issued by the City Clerk.

If the application is denied for some reason, an appeal process is available. Contact the City Clerk for information on the appeal procedures.

Special Requirements

• Insurance Coverage: Public liability insurance in the amounts of one hundred thousand dollars for personal injuries to one person or three hundred thousand dollars for more than one person and property damage insurance in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars for each accident or occurrence. The certificate of insurance must be submitted to the City Clerk and must include a provision that the insurance will not be cancelled without thirty days prior written notice to the City Clerk.
• The taxicab license can be transferred to a bona fide purchaser of the business. Such transfer shall include a fee of $25 for each vehicle. The fee will be refunded if the transfer of the license is denied.
• A schedule of taxicab fares must be filed with the City Clerk prior to operating the taxicabs and the schedule of fares must be displayed in each taxicab.
