Mayor for the City of Poulsbo

Mayor Kathryn Quade

I was born in Michigan and grew up in California. After high school, I was admitted to the Glasgow School of Art, in Scotland, which I attended for two years. When my family returned to the States, I attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where I met my future husband, Doug

My husband's work took us to many interesting countries around the world. Over the years, we have lived in Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and England, and even took a motorcycle trip down into Mexico.

In the mid-seventies, my parents moved to Poulsbo, and when the opportunity arose to join them, we were delighted to move north and to raise our son in this lovely community.

I wanted to be more active in the community and was appointed to the City's Board of Adjustments in June 1991. I then ran for City Council and was elected in November 1991. I served on the Poulsbo City Council until 1994 when work required us to relocate to California once again.

Having had the opportunity to see so much of the world, we knew exactly where we wanted to settle after Doug's semi-retirement. We returned to Poulsbo in 1999. I was elected to the Poulsbo City Council again in 2001.

I appreciate the beauty and uniqueness Poulsbo offers and recognize how some would like to keep it just the way it was when they first moved here. However, that beauty and uniqueness continues to attract others, who also want to live here. We must work hard to balance these two issues - small community atmosphere and growth. I am an advocate for environmental protection and work hard to assure that our citizens have an opportunity to be heard on issues of importance to Poulsbo and their quality of life.

Besides having served on all the City's Council committees, I serve as Poulsbo's representative to Kitsap County's Law Enforcement Officer and Firefighter Board, and as board monitor on two Diversion Boards for the Kitsap County Juvenile Justice system. In conjunction with the Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council, we are researching opportunities for local governments to coordinate services in an effort to reduce costs.

I continue to enjoy traveling, but mostly on motorcycle trips around United States now. I am once again following my muse and have picked up a brush and am painting. Some of my pieces have been on display at the local Arts & Craft Show in Port Gamble.

I take my responsibility of representation literally and appreciate input from all those interested in our community. I can be contacted by telephone (360-779-3901), email ( kquade@cityofpoulsbo.com ), or by sending a note to Poulsbo City Hall.
