Current Projects
North Kitsap Regional Event Center
With the successful and timely completion of the NKSD bond and state funded projects at the NKHS Gymnasium building and the NK Community Center Pool and Auditorium building, the Poulsbo Learning Campus attained eligibility for Regional Event Center funding as it becomes available. This master planning effort is the first step toward determining community priorities and needs. It is funded and managed through a partnership of the Kitsap Public Facilities District, Kitsap County, City of Poulsbo and NK School District. Phase 1 is underway, with construction of two synthetic turf fields - one at North Kitsap High School and one at Strawberry Field - due to be completed by the end of September 2008.
Please contact Mike Walton at (360) 698-1885 or mwalton@kitsap-pfd.org if you have questions about this project.
Poulsbo's Fish Park
A master plan for this site was completed in 2004, and volunteer work parties have been working tirelessly to improve this 13.36 acre nature park in the middle of the city. Work tasks that are ongoing includes the removal and cleaning of invasive weeds, the planting of native trees and shrubs, and the building of about 1 mile of pedestrain trails. The Poulsbo Lions Club has built two viewing platforms, and the Poulsbo Rotary Club and Eagle Scout Douglas Vogel have each built one platform for people to enjoy viewing opportunities along the estuary.
With the help of artist Sandra Noel, the Fish Park Steering Committee has created eight interpretive signs along the trails. Park users can learn about the natural systems, wildlife and plant life on this restored site. There are three pedestrain bridges, taking people across creeks, one footbridge built by Eagle Scout Clayton Button, and two beautiful benches built by Eagle Scout John Conner. Other projects to be completed in 2008 includes the building of 750 lineal feet of boardwalk along the west side of the park and the installation of a kiosk for park information.
Artist John Fritsch is donating his time and talents to create a park sign using a 19-ton boulder. The rock will soon have a salmon carved into the face of it, welcoming people to the park. (click here to see a photo)
The park is located at 288 Lindvig Way. Funding has been secured through a matching grant from the State of Washington, Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account (ALEA) to do much of this work. The endless work by the Fish Park Steering Committee, community volunteers, businesses and organizations has contributed as "match" for the ALEA grant. The City of Poulsbo has also budgeted funds for this project.
Please join us for work parties the third Sunday of the month from 1-4 pm. Dress for the weather and bring your favorite gardening tools and gloves. Everyone is welcome-young and old.
