Halloween Safety Tips:

October is National Crime Prevention month and the Poulsbo Police Department reminds you to take time to brush up on some crime prevention tips.  One October Holiday that is fast approaching and that involves safety of kids is of course Halloween.  Here are some tips to keep kids of all ages safe this Halloween.

To ensure that trick-or-treaters, you and your house stay safe, remember:

•Clear your yard and sidewalk of any obstacles or decorations that may

be hard to see in the dark.
•Keep your house well lit, both inside and out.
•Report ANY suspicious or criminal activity to 911.

Costume tips:

•Try makeup instead of masks; it's more comfortable and helps with visibility.
•Check to ensure that costumes are flame-retardant; this helps ensure

        safety around jack-o'-lanterns.
•Keep costumes short to ensure that tripping is kept at a minimum.

•Look for brightly colored costumes, attach reflector strips to costumes and

bags; flash lights as well as glow sticks are also recommended.

While on the walk:
•Kids of all ages should trick or treat in groups; younger kids should be

       accompanied by an adult.
•Review the route for trick-or-treating beforehand and set a time when

        children should be home.
•Have a plan for if your child gets separated from his/her friends or from

        you.

•Remind your children to never enter a strangers house or car.

•Check all treats in a well-lit area. Be especially wary of anything that

is not wrapped by the factory or that is no longer sealed.  When in doubt,

       throw it out.

Special Event

October 31, 2009 you and your children are invited to
